Beyond the "Healthy" Mask: Why I’m Rewriting My Family’s Health Story

If you had asked me a few years ago who the healthiest people I knew were, I wouldn’t have hesitated: my grandparents.

They were the gold standard. They cooked from scratch, ate fish regularly, and started every day with boiled eggs or bran flakes. They weren't just active; they were "gym daily" active. So, when illness struck them both way before their time—my grandpa suffering a stroke and my nan diagnosed with bowel cancer shortly after—it felt like a betrayal.

At the time, I remember desperately researching "miracle cures." I thought if I could just find the right food, I could fix it. But it was too late. I was told what we’re all told when "healthy" people get sick: “It’s just genetics,” or “Life is just unfair.”

I’m here to say: I don’t buy it anymore.

The "Switch"

Science is now showing us that while genetics might load the gun, our lifestyle pulls the trigger. Our habits determine if that genetic "switch" stays off.

Looking back at my grandparents’ lifestyle with 2026 eyes, I see the hidden cracks. I remember the cakes made from scratch—but they were loaded with butter, refined flour, and sugar. I remember the fizzy drinks, the sweets, and the processed "shortcuts" used to jazz up weekday meals. They never touched a McDonald’s and followed mostly a Mediterranean diet, but it was a version filled with small "treats."

I have to wonder: Was "moderation" enough to tip the balance? We now know that health doesn't start at the doctor's office; it starts decades before the first symptom appears.

Breaking the Cycle for the Next Generation

As a parent, this realization hits even harder. What we give our children today doesn't just fill their bellies for the afternoon; it becomes wholly ingrained in their lives.

We all know how hard it is to break the habits we were raised with: the pressure of "having to finish the plate," the expectation of something sugary after every dinner, or gravitating toward refined, processed foods for a quick lunch. These aren't just preferences; they are blueprints. By using evidence-backed facts in everything we do, we aren't just feeding our kids—we are paving the way for their healthier tomorrow. We are helping them build a foundation where the "right" choice is the easy one.

My Journey: From Cheese-atarian to Plant-Powered

My own wake-up call came just before Covid-19. I’d been a vegetarian since I was eleven, but I was what I call a "cheese-atarian." My diet was almost entirely eggs and dairy. Consequently, I suffered: daily indigestion, chronic heartburn, and a constant "itchy throat" I blamed on my cats.

I started watching nutrition documentaries on Netflix, but I was skeptical. I wanted to know: Was this real science, or just heart-tugging cherry-picking?

That curiosity led me to the evidence. I transitioned to Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) living, swapping the dairy for nutritional yeast and oat milk, and leaning on staples like the Plants Over Processed cookbook. (<Affiliate link) The result? The heartburn vanished. The "allergies" cleared. I realized my body wasn't failing me; it was just waiting for the right fuel.

The Reality of "Mum Energy"

Today, I’m a mum of two. I’m not going to pretend I’m a glowing beacon of zen—I’m exhausted. But there’s a difference between "lack of sleep" tired and "bad nutrition" tired.

Despite babies that treat sleep like a suggestion, I still have the energy to play my favourite roles: the Octopus managing eight things at once, the Hoover Lady chasing the kids, and the Disgruntled Customer in my daughter’s imaginary coffee shop.

Why I’m Sharing This

I’m passionate about providing facts because I don’t want other families to feel the weight of preventable grief. My nan should have been at my wedding. She did everything she thought was "right," but the definition of "right" has changed.

We owe it to ourselves, and our children, to fuel our bodies with the best possible evidence. I’m doing this for my grandparents, for myself, and for my kids—because what we put on our plates today is the legacy we leave tomorrow.
