I’ve Gone Down a Wormhole… And I Can’t Go Back

As a newly qualified nutritional adviser, my days are usually spent focused on the role of food and diet. I’ve been educated and tested on how vitamins, minerals, and macros impact the human body. But lately, I’ve delved into research that has piqued a new, deeper interest.

It’s becoming clear that it’s not just what we eat and drink that matters, but also the cooking equipment, detergents, and everyday apparatus we use. These hidden factors are reaching into our bodies, impacting our hormones and our overall wellbeing.

The Fact That Changed Everything

It all started with a fact I shared with my class after reading The Last Bear by Hannah Gold (if you haven't read it, you truly must—it’s beautiful and heart-breaking).

I came across a study that tried to measure the long-term health effects of microplastics on humans. They hit a wall. Why? Because they couldn't find a control group. Let that sink in for a second. Researchers couldn't find a single person on Earth who was "clean" or microplastic-free to compare against the rest of us. They even tested human placentas, and every single one contained microplastics. We have reached a point where plastic is no longer just in our oceans; it is in our blood.

Awareness, Not Fearmongering

Now I've given you that statistic, let me clarify that I'm not here to scare you!

We know that having microplastics and "forever chemicals" (PFAS) in our bodies isn't a good thing. We also know that in the modern world, they are pretty much inevitable.

But here is the silver lining: We can limit them. My mission is to support you on your health journey. I am not here to fearmonger or pressure you into buying expensive products. I’m just a woman—a mum, teacher and nutritional adviser—trying to help you lead a happy, longevous life. While I may include affiliate links for things I’ve personally tried and tested, you are never under any obligation to buy them.

Small Changes for a Big Future

We are at the start of a new year, and I know that most of us can’t afford to bin everything in our kitchens and start fresh. That’s not what this is about. This is an ongoing process, not an all-or-nothing approach.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing a series of posts about how we can slowly ditch the hidden chemicals in our everyday lives in favour of a more eco-friendly, sustainable, and health-conscious future.

Little by little, if we make small changes, we can build a better future for ourselves and our children. I hope you’ll join me down the wormhole!
