"Why Run?" to Week 1 Done: My Couch to 5K Journey

I’ll be honest: I never understood runners.

For years, I’ve watched people pounding the pavement and wondered what on earth would possess someone to do that for fun. But after reading so many of your "big change" stories over the years, I reached a point where I thought: If they can do it, why can’t I?

So, here I am. Week 1 is officially in the bag.

The Sarah Millican "Betrayal"

I opted for Sarah Millican as my voice coach on the app, fully expecting to be coached through the sweat with a side of stand-up. I have to say, I was a bit disappointed! I was waiting for the jokes to distract me from my lungs, but she was strictly professional. Apparently, even Sarah takes running seriously!

The Good, The Bad, and The "Sprints"

To my absolute surprise, I’ve actually… enjoyed it?

The 60-second jog intervals didn't leave me feeling completely winded, which was my biggest fear. I’ve been calling them "jog-sprints," and finishing them has given me a genuine boost. I feel better in myself, and for the first time ever, I’m not scared to go on my next run. I’m calling that a massive success.

The "Holiday Bubble" Reality Check

I’ll admit, I’ve had a bit of help. I’m currently away, so my runs have been accompanied by beautiful views and—most importantly—grandparents who have been happy to watch the kids while my husband and I head out together.

I know that once I’m back home, the reality of the school run, work, and the "boring" local streets might make things a bit tougher.

My Top Tips for Keeping the Momentum (At Home!)

If you’re starting your own journey or wondering how to keep going when the "holiday magic" wears off, here is my plan for staying on track:

  • The "Kit First" Rule: On run days, the leggings go on the moment I wake up. It’s much harder to say no when you’re already dressed for the part.

  • The Audiobook Reward: Since Sarah wasn’t giving me the laughs, I’m finding a podcast or book that I’m only allowed to listen to while running. It’s the ultimate carrot on a stick.

  • Embrace the "Snail’s Pace": I’ve realized it’s not about how fast those 60 seconds are; it’s just about doing them. If I need to slow down to keep going, that’s okay.

  • Tag-Teaming: Back home, the husband and I will have to swap. One of us handles the "witching hour" with the kids while the other gets their 30 minutes of headspace. I may be luring in some friends to help keep me on track!

To anyone else sitting on the couch wondering if they can: Give it a go. If I can survive Week 1, anyone can!
